Media Statement from Indianapolis City-County Council President Maggie A. Lewis, Regarding the Passing of the 2018 City-County Budget
INDIANAPOLIS – Tonight in a vote of 21 to 2, the Indianapolis City-County Council has approved the 2018 city-county budget. I want to thank my colleagues for their hard work during all phases of the budgeting cycle. From attending budget hearings to scheduling one-on-one meetings with city-county agencies, Councillors are committed to presenting a budget that will serve the best interest of our entire community.
I am especially proud of our ongoing efforts to close the structural deficit while presenting our residents with a balanced budget. Through investments in public safety, offering continuous support for criminal justice reform, providing funding for major infrastructure improvements and creating economic development opportunities, the 2018 budget will create a better city and prepare us for the future.
This budget belongs to our taxpayers and we will all benefit from the special attention given to public safety, with funding for a class of 86 new police officers and 40 new firefighters, coupled with crime prevention and mental health services.
Thank you to the administration for holding the line on spending and creating a budget that is lean, impactful and represents sound fiscal accountability. I encourage our community to attend the 2018 Council meetings and remain engaged throughout the 2018 fiscal year.
